Today a good thing happened to a good person, as Ed Sheeran was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire by Prince Charles at an Investiture Ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
The Shape of You singer was bestowed the MBE honour for his services to music and charity, after it was announced he was the highest streamed Spotify artist this year.
What a week!
While picking up his badge from the Prince of Wales during the 2017 Birthday Honours, he also put his hand up for the royal wedding – letting people know he was free should Prince Harry and Meghan Markle be in need of a performer at their May nuptials at Windsor Palace.
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony on Thursday afternoon, Ed revealed Charles’ surprise that he was playing a gig in New York on Friday – only one day after the ceremony.
26-year-old Ed said: “He was asking me if I was still selling lots of records and I told him I’ve got a concert in New York tomorrow, and he was quite surprised I was flying after this.”
That loyalty to the cause might go part the way to explaining the reason Ed has had such a successful career.
A solid performer, the singer only cancelled his first shows ever after he broke both his arms in a cycling accident on the way to a boozer in London recently.
When asked about the secret to his success, the star played down his amazing skill, saying he thinks it’s all down to “persistence”.
“I don’t have a vast amount of talent compared to other people,” he said. “I think talent is like 30% of it and persistence, drive and self belief are the other ones, which I guess are all the same thing.”
But that didn’t stop him celebrating such an amazing achievement, adding how proud his grandfather BIll would be if he were around to see his grandson awarded with an MBE.
“My grandfather was a massive royalist,” he said. “He had all the commemorative plates and stuff, and he died on this day four years ago, so it’s actually quite a nice full circle thing, I guess he’d be pretty proud.”
Ed is currently in line to score the coveted Christmas number one position tomorrow, after recently re-releasing his hit Perfect – adding a collaboration with superstar Beyonce.
Two legends for the price of one!
Speaking to Ellen Degeneres recently , Ed admitted he didn’t expect Queen Bey to agree to such a collaboration, but thought he’d give it a go anyway.
It comes after he was ‘snubbed’ the Song of the Year – much to Ellen’s anger.
He said: “My outlook on it is some years you have the year and some years you don’t have the year and maybe this year isn’t my year.”
He added the validation comes from “when you see genuine people enjoying the songs.”
“I’d rather have a lifetime of people come up to me saying this song effected me in a positive way, saying that song was my wedding song or that song was my first kiss,” he said.
And, evidently, the masses are listening, as it was announced Ed scored a massive 6.3 billion steams on music app Spotify, taking out the top spot, with Spotify’s CEO proclaiming 2017 ‘The Year of Ed Sheeran’.
Can’t argue with that plaudit.
