Woman's birthday surprise ruined after 'embarrassing series of blunders' at celebrity chef Gino D'Acampo restaurant

A woman’s birthday surprise was ruined after an ’embarrassing series of blunders’ at celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo’s new restaurant.

The birthday girl claims she found a piece of plastic in her chicken dish and watched awkwardly as someone on the wrong table blew out the candles on her cake.

Emilia Matos-Gois, 20, says she was left cringing with embarrassment after a catalogue of errors at the meal she’d organised for her friend’s 25th birthday in Hull.

Wanting to make the occasion a little bit extra special, Emilia had asked staff whether she could decorate their dinner table at My Restaurant in Kingswood Retail Park ahead of their meal on Wednesday, January 10.

The booking at the eatery which opened in December was set for 8pm and staff said Emilia could come early to give their table a little birthday sparkle.

Upon arriving, she was told the table was not ready and her friend ended up arriving long before the table could be decorated – spoiling the first part of the surprise, the Hull Daily Mail reports.

Given the Italian restaurant was busy, the party of five got drinks in the bar area and Emilia said the group was not seated until 8.30pm.

To apologise, they were offered a complimentary round of drinks which apparently did not arrive until the end of their meals.

But things really started to go wrong after Emilia and her friends ordered their meals.

She said: “Even though we’d lost part of the surprise by not being able to decorate the table ahead of my friend arriving, we had given the staff a birthday cake which we’d planned as a surprise for after the meal.

“Not long after we’d ordered, we heard the Happy Birthday song playing and our cake being taken to another table.

“We can laugh about it now but we weren’t very happy when we heard the song playing and seeing someone else blowing out the candles on the cake we’d got.

“We still did it later on even though the surprise was rather ruined.”

When the group received their meal, the birthday girl says she got a present she really did not want.

Emilia, who lives in Hull, said: “My friend found a big piece of plastic in her chicken dish. My friend’s reaction was, ‘oh my god, what is this?’ and then it was yet was another issue we had to talk to staff about.”

Emilia says the management at My Restaurant were not helpful.

“The manager just seemed to avoid us,” she said. “The reception staff were very annoyed on our behalf and couldn’t believe what kept going wrong.”

Emilia claimed management did not tell her group whether they would be charged for their experience so they eventually left without paying.

The stylish My Restaurant aims to give diners a relaxed and luxurious time at the stylish venue.

On the walls, the restaurant has lots of photos of the celeb chef, famous from This Morning and I’m a Celebrity, and his famous friends.

Ahead of My Restaurant opening Gino told the Hull Daily Mail that the city was lacking a proper Italian restaurant.

“I’ve been around Hull and I haven’t seen any proper Italian restaurants,” Gino said.

“That’s why I came here. I thought, ‘You know what, I’m going to come to Hull’.

“I usually go to places – the usual suspects – such as Manchester, Leeds and London, but I also want to pick places where I think it needs an Italian restaurant.

“Hull deserves a proper Italian experience.”

Emilia however, feels she and her friends did not get the night out they were expecting.

“For the price, I really don’t think it is all that it has been made out to be,” Emila said.

“In my opinion, when you look at the menu and see what they are charging you’d expect quality and we didn’t get that.

“When a new place opens you do expect some teething problems but not like what we experienced when we visited Gino’s.

“It was just one thing after another and just became rather embarrassing for everyone. My friend was really upset that we’d gone to so much effort and the surprise was ruined.”

My Restaurant were approached by the Hull Daily Mail on Emilia’s behalf.

A spokesman said: “We were extremely sorry to learn of the party’s experience.

“The matter was dealt with swiftly on the night by the general manager and we remain in close dialogue with the customer.

“Guest experience is of up-most importance to us and we value all feedback.”
